City through a different lens

Combination of 44 panoramic shots captured by Prabal Mohanty on display

An exhibition of pictures capturing some rare and unusual perspective of the cityscape by photographer Prabal Mohanty was inaugurated at Vishakha Museum on Friday. The four-day show has a collection of 21 images —each a panorama shot of the city.

Inaugurating the exhibition, Visakhapatnam Port Trust Chairman M.T. Krishna Babu said the pictures brought forth a different beauty of the city. Reiterating the need for a dedicated art gallery to showcase the works of artists and photographers, he said the VPT’s project of a sprawling art centre at Saligramapuram would have a state-of-the-art gallery on the ground floor.

Speaking about the images, environmentalist Rani Sharma said such aerial panorama shots could go a long way to bring to light any kind of vandalism at geologically significant sites like the Erra Matti Dibbalu. Former Customs Commissioner S.C. Choudhury went around the exhibition and appreciated the photographer.

Mr. Mohanty’s stint in professional photography started in 2003.

Fish eye lens

He has been taking panorama images of some popular tourist spots in the city for the past two years. The exhibition showcases aerial panorama shots taken from fish eye lens. “The idea behind this concept is to give a 360-degree perspective to a place,” said Mr. Mohanty. Speaking about one of his most different panorama shots, Mr. Mohanty said: “It was a picture which was a combination of 44 images and captured the entire coastline from the port to Palm Beach Hotel. I had to go on a boat six times to get the right shots,” he added. That image of dimensions two feet by 30 feet is displayed as a permanent feature on the second floor of the museum.

The exhibition features three images at the left side of the entrance showcasing aerial panoramas of the port and city coastline.

Visakha Camera Club chairman Bijay Kumar Agrawal participated in the inaugural. The expo will remain open until Monday, from 12 noon to 8 p.m.
